Unique Properties of Albanian Wild Olive Oil

Wild olive oil contains another important substance known as oleuropein aglycon praised for its protective values against cancer, heart disease and brain.

Did you know that in Albania there are also some of the oldest ulsters? They are wild olive trees, the grains of which are much smaller than those of cultivated olives. The wilder and older, the smaller the grains.

"Wild plants were a thing of the past, but they could also be a future," says olive growing expert Dhimitër Panajoti.

"Ullastra," says Mr. Panajoti, "is usually used to pollinate other olives." The amount of oil produced by the ullastra is quite small, so it is not worth having this product only from this tree, although the values of this oil are very good, especially because it contains unsaturated fatty acids, liquid and not harmful fats.

In Albania, ullastra, wild olives are found in all areas where there are olive groves. Mr. Panajoti explains that they are located in the district of Tirana and Durrës, Elbasan to Shkodra, while very famous ullastra are those in the southern areas.

"In Kakome, he says, there are whole forests with groves, but they are wild and no one deals with their processing. "Besides, they are in very deep areas and not well maintained."

Ullastras, being wild trees, miraculously resist drought, and Mr. Panajoti reveals an interesting fact.

‘Climate change and heat waves are endangering vegetation, thus endangering production as well.

"Spain is one of the countries that in the national strategy against climate change has included the use of cuttings, wild olive trees to produce cultivated cultivars that are resistant to drought, so to continue production even in the face of heat waves," he says. .

In Elbasan the ullastra is also called the ‘grandmother of olives’, from where the other olives also came from. Ullastra oil is mainly used for healing because the amount per 100 kg of olives does not exceed 10 liters of oil.

There are very few olive factories that produce oil from ullastra, although there is a demand, but the price is high.

Fatmir Skilja, one of the well-known producers of olive oil in Elbasan, says that after a break, he will return to the production of olive oil this year.

"We in Elbasan," he says, "do not call it wild olive, but we call it ulster just like the Latin root oleaster Europea."

In our olive grove we can collect about 60-70 kg this year, but buying them from other farmers I think to collect about 300-400 kg as the amount of production is low, 6-7 kg of oil per 100 kg of olives from the vine Mr. Skilja says that the oil that has previously been produced from the olives of this wild tree had a very strong aroma and full ruby color and from the analyzes made in Greece it resulted in fantastic values as a goodmedicine.

"The cost may be higher 3 or 5 USD, but its values have not been paid," says Mr. Skilja.

Superior power of ullastra oil

Ullastra oil is superior in nature and belongs to the category of those foods that protect blood lipids from oxidative stress according to Regulation 432/2012 of the European Union.

Ullastera oil is so thick that one tablespoon a day is enough to get the maximum health values.

The extraction procedure of this oil (by cold pressing) guarantees maximum quality and high bioactive values.

Olives are processed on the same day, so the fruit is transformed into oil in less than 24 hours.

Wild olive oil is unique. It is used in food as a better alternative to extra virgin olive oil, but also as a supplement to be consumed in the morning.

When the fruit is properly picked, harvested and pressed, the oil it produces has a high concentration of two important pharmaceutical substances: Oleocanthal (the substance that gives olive oil its best quality, even the spicy taste on the palate) .

This oil not only has high antioxidant values, but also has the ability to lower cholesterol levels and fight inflammation.

The oleocanthal substance makes a valuable contribution to brain health and prevents Alzheimer’s disease.

Studies have shown that this substance binds to harmful neurotoxins and prevents them from attacking neurons.

This makes the antibodies easier to fight the toxins. Thanks to this ability, studies say that consuming olive oil rich in this substance prevents brain degradation.

Studies

A 14-year study of 1,880 seniors in New York found that those who ate a diet rich in oleocanthal were 40 percent less likely to be diagnosed with the disease.

Studies conducted at the Kapodistrian University in Athens, Greece, showed that wild olive oil has the highest oleocanthal concentration, 528 mg / kg.

Other olive oils have this indicator at a lower level, 99 mg / kg. Wild olive oil contains 194 mg / kg oleacein while other oils have only 48 mg / kg oleacein.

Wild olive oil contains another important substance known as oleuropein aglycon praised for its protective values against cancer, heart disease and brain.

Wild olive oil also contains a chemical known as ligstroside aglycon, at a record level of 371 mg / kg. Wild olive oil has 4 times more medicinal elements than the average of any other olive oil.

Other values of wild olive oil

• Lowers bad cholesterol levels

• Helps the cardiovascular system, lowering blood pressure and preventing thrombosis

• Helps bone development of young children by making calcium absorption easier. The high concentration of vitamin E helps counteract the effects of aging.

• Calms the stomach and prevents the formation of ulcers and other diseases.

Oleic acid in wild olive oil prevents genetic mutations that cause cancer. It also helps metabolism and is especially helpful in treating diabetes.

In ancient times, Homer called the wild olive oil "Liquid Gold" while Hippocrates called it the "Great Healer". Have these values been forgotten? /
